Passover
What is Passover?
פסח (Passover), and the week of unleavened bread that accompanies it, is a reserved time for remembering our deliverance from bondage to freedom by יהוה.
Past
Passover has been around since the children of ישראל (Israel) left Egypt. The first Passover is recorded in Exodus and it says יהוה brought the children of Israel out of the bondage of Egypt through his outstretched arm. There was a vast drought like never before in Egypt and the surrounding lands, but Egypt was prospering and had stored up a massive amount of extra grains thanks to יוסף (Joseph), a son of Israel who advised the Pharaoh with what יהוה told him, so ישראל moved to Egypt, but a new Pharaoh came along who did not know יוסף nor his people and was scared of their growing population and ordered their firstborn baby boys to be murdered. One of these babies was saved by his mother and raised by the Pharaoh’s daughter. That boy was משה (Moses) and grew to be יהוה‘s righthand man who led his people out of Egypt. He did wonderous miracles and brought 10 plagues upon Egypt that displayed his authority over all their gods. The 10nth plague was determined by Pharaoh and all their firstborns died, but יהוה gave the children of ישראל instructions regarding a sacrifice, their last meal in Egypt, and preparations to leave Egypt, so all who were in an Israelite’s house the night of that plague were spared. Death passed over them instead of walking in their doors. Jews still keep the day holy and remember it to this day as יהוה taught them.
Purpose
יהוה says that פסח is a שבת (sabbath) and is a holy day for all his people throughout their generations to remember that day when יהוה redeemed them and brought them out of the bondage and land of Egypt by his outstretched arm. It also serves to remind us how יהוה redeemed us from the bondage and land of sin in our personal lives. Vigilant christians remember Jesus’s (ישוע) last meal and death along with it. This holy day is also a foreshadowing of another day that has yet to come.
Procedure
- The first day and last day are kept and treated as שבת except cooking is allowed.
- On the 10nth day of the month, pick a flawless lamb for sacrifice.
